The official AMA style blog posts weekly about changes related to the 11th edition.
The American Medical Association (AMA), International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) and the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) established uniform requirements for manuscript submission to ensure consistency within medical reporting. Citing Medicine contains samples of formatted references and is frequently updated. Please see AMA manual of Style 11th ed. 3.1 for more information on style uniformity.
A Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is a unique alphanumeric string that identifies content and provides a persistent link to its location on the internet- regardless of the database the article is retrieved from. When possible, always include the DOI.
The Journal of the American Medical Association has thorough submission guidelines for formatting a variety of manuscripts. The Determine My Article Type section may be particularly helpful prior to submission.
When referencing a journal in AMA style, journal titles are always italicized and abbreviated. Standard abbreviations may be searched through the link above. Similarly, verifying that the journal is indexed within the NLM will help you avoid citing predatory journals.
The AMA Manual of Style website provides information on new policies, notices of updates to the manual and style quizzes. Refer to the eBook or print edition to see full contents of the manual as published in 2020.
