Tips for Evaluating Athletic Training Resources

  1. Is it Peer Reviewed?
Limit your search to Peer Reviewed articles -- Peer Reviewed
Use Ulrichsweb™ Global Serials Directory to determine if the journal is peer reviewed. Need to verify that a journal is peer reviewed (refereed)? Search the Icon of a padlock Ulrichsweb periodicals directory for the title of the journal. If you see this icon  , the journal is refereed.

  2. Who is the author? What do you know about the journal or publisher?
Peer reviewed articles are typically written by professors, researchers, or other scholars who specialize in the field and are often  identified by the academic institution at which they work.  They are published by professional associations, university publishers or other academic publishers to report research results or discuss ongoing research in detail.

  3. Who is the intended audience?  Patients? Consumers? Healthcare professionals?
Peer reviewed articles are intended for professionals in the field of the subject.

  4. What is the purpose?  Research Article?  Report? Systematic Review?
Peer reviewed articles are highly specialized and may use technical language.  They will cite their sources and include footnotes, endnotes, or parenthetical citations and/or a list of bibliographic references.  They may include graphs and tables and they undergo a peer review process before publication.
