Poster Design Advice

Here is some advice to get you started designing a Poster Presentation:

  • Creating Effective Poster Presentations (website)
This site offers advice on designing an attractive poster. Other sections include tips on writing abstracts and recommendations on how to present the poster at a conference.
  • Designing Conference Posters (website)
Colin Purrington provides several poster templates, advice on printing and transporting large posters, and a list of "Do's and Don'ts" of poster presentations.
  • Tips on Poster Presentations at Professional Conferences (pdf)
An experienced academic lists the sections of a research poster and what should be included in each section, advises on formatting and design issues, and discusses the type of behavior expected by poster presenters at conferences.
  • Better Posters: A Resource for Improving Poster Presentations (blog)
"Academic conference posters are often ugly, with tiny text, confusing layouts, and dubious colour schemes. Better Posters is about making posters informative and beautiful." - "Better Posters"

Poster Creation

If you can use Microsoft PowerPoint, then you can create your own poster!

Open a new document in PowerPoint.

  • Go to Design –> Slide Size
  • Choose Custom Slide Size
  • Set Width and Height (max. 56″)
  • Choose the Landscape (horizontal) or Portrait orientation.
  • Click OK.
  • If a message pops up telling you that “The current page size exceeds the printable area of the paper in the printer” just click OK.
  • Poster Template - Vertical (32" x 40")
  • Poster Template - 4 Column (32" x 40")
This size fits on a sheet of foamcore. Use for posters that will be displayed on an easel.
  • Poster Template (36" x 48")
This size is best for conferences where bulletin boards are 4 feet wide.
  • Poster Template - Horizontal (48" x 36")
This is a standard size but is too large to be mounted on foam core at the IWU Print Center.

Printing tips:

  • Document size must be the actual size desired for printing.  Do not create a 8.5 x 11 document and expect it to just be enlarged.
  • The preferred file type is a PDF, but documents may be created in another program such as PowerPoint and converted to PDF.
